Run-Hide-Fight Principle
The Run-Hide-Fight principle describes a simple, actionable framework for responding to an active threat or violent intruder situation.
It provides individuals with clear guidance on how to act quickly to protect themselves and others: run if possible, hide if necessary, and fight only as a last resort.

Origin and purpose of Run - Hide - Flight
The Run-Hide-Fight concept was developed and promoted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and has since been adopted by law enforcement agencies and safety experts across the world.
Its purpose is to offer a clear, easy-to-remember decision model that helps people make life-saving choices in high-stress, rapidly evolving situations.
In the United Kingdom and other countries, similar approaches are now included in emergency preparedness and workplace safety training, especially for schools, universities, and public institutions.

The Three Steps Explained
1. Run
If it is safe to do so, immediately move away from the danger.
Leave belongings behind, encourage others to follow, and prevent others from entering the affected area.
The main goal is to reach safety as quickly as possible.
2. Hide
If escape is not possible, find a safe place to hide.
Lock or barricade doors, silence mobile phones, stay quiet and out of sight.
Wait for law enforcement to arrive, and only move when it is clearly safe to do so.
3. Fight
As a last resort, and only when in immediate danger, take action to protect yourself.
Use any available items to defend yourself and commit to your actions with determination.
This step emphasizes self-defence, not aggression.

Use of the Run-Hide-Fight Principle in Schools and Workplaces
In schools and workplaces, the Run-Hide-Fight principle serves as a behavioural guide during emergency training and drills.
It helps staff and students remember how to react calmly and effectively if confronted with a threat.
However, behaviour alone is not enough.
Fast, coordinated communication is essential to trigger protective actions in time.
A digital alerting system like safeREACH ensures that everyone receives reliable instructions within seconds - enabling an organised response and reducing chaos during critical incidents.
